Rebooting the food system.
Towards a more inclusive society with a sense of shared responsibility for sustainable food supply chains at local and global levels, addressing global inequalities and ecological crises.
The global food system is facing a multitude of challenges. It is both a victim of and a major contributor to the environmental and climate crises, and it plays a role in human rights violations in global food chains. We can no longer accept the fact that globalized food production and consumption are harming people and the planet. The EU has already taken an important step by introducing the Farm to Fork Strategy and adopting the Corporate Sustainability Data Disclosure Directive (CSDDD). However, without the cooperation and support of those who stand to benefit most from a green and just transition – young EU citizens – change will happen too slowly.
A consortium of 14 environmental, human rights, and youth organizations from nine EU member states is implementing the Rebooting the Food System project. The aim is to raise awareness and mobilize young people in the EU to become agents of change themselves. Together, they can become part of sustainable and inclusive solutions for a globally fair food system. And we must support and cooperate with them in this endeavor.
The goal: EU citizens, especially young people and civil society organizations, are aware of the realities of the global food system challenges and the opportunities for a green and fair transition, and actively support and shape them, both through their consumption patterns and through their understanding of the need for environmentally friendly food production that does not discriminate against vulnerable groups.
We will achieve this through innovative campaigns, capacity building, education and knowledge sharing, providing spaces (physical and virtual) for community building and designing activities to support the transition to a safe, sustainable and fair food system. We will strengthen cooperation between different stakeholders in the food chain, connecting activists, producers, and farmers from the global North and global South.
