Stricter environmental policies at the EU level, which are key to decarbonizing the transport sector and addressing climate change, may adversely affect low-income and other vulnerable populations, as they often cannot afford the “green transition.” This is fuelling opposition to European climate measures in less developed regions, particularly in rural areas of the eastern and southern EU Member States. The EU and its Member States thus face a double challenge: how to decarbonize transport while making it more accessible to those most at risk of transport poverty. To successfully address this challenge, it is essential to increase understanding of the reasons for accelerating the decarbonization of transport and to clearly present how local communities can reap the benefits of the green transition and take advantage of the opportunities it offers.
The project aims to empower national and local stakeholders in the Czech Republic and Slovenia to adopt inclusive transport policies, while improving the understanding, acceptance, and support for transport decarbonization measures among vulnerable groups and the wider public.
Project goals:
- Encourage the inclusion of the no one left behind principle in transport policy.
- Increase the knowledge of national and local stakeholders about transport poverty and the positive effects of decarbonization.
- Strengthen cooperation between local and national levels in designing and implementing measures to reduce transport poverty.
- Support vulnerable groups in rural areas by incorporating appropriate sustainable mobility solutions.
The project will analyze municipal integrated transport strategies from the perspective of addressing transport poverty. We will also prepare a publication on good practices for addressing transport poverty. Together with our partners, we will organize two international study tours to observe good practices in overcoming transport poverty and carry out awareness-raising and advocacy activities.
